It was a warm fall night in mid-September 1988 about 8PM after dinner in Weaverville, North Carolina just north of Asheville in the USA. I was still a new Christian being saved in the Spring of the last year at age 36.
Everything was so new…the Word, the messages, the fellowship…and the music. We were at the Young Life camp known as Windy Gap in the mountains at The Fellowship gathering for about 150 men. It was by invite only and some believers from Orlando had invited me to the annual trek.
My heart was already full, and the Holy Spirit had so impacted me, I was already spent from crying and the love and the conviction. Saturday was the culmination of the retreat that began Friday noon, and after the message that night by Gordon McDonald, the guitarist Steve paused before the last song.
The doors to the meeting hall were open. You could smell the fall mountain air. The crickets were chipping loudly. Then Steve slowly began to sing a song acapella. Other men joined in. I had never, ever heard a song so impactful. “When I survey the wondrous cross…” it began. By the 2nd verse, the men were harmonizing, I was humming along…and I was undone further in tears of wondrous gratitude steaming freely down my face.
I saw never forget that moment. As I type this, I can hear and see the scene in my mind. It shall never fade. Ever. You too know those type of moments. I still have the song on cassette from that year and have digitized it.
Our dear brother and fellow musician Fernando Ortega has offered a live rendition of this well known Englishman Issac Watts song from the late 1600’s blended in both acapella and with modest instrumentation. We here at Walk Worthy pray your heart too will be both undone and then filled with the wonder of our Christ and His living sacrifice for us all!
