What we Christians (meaning ‘little Christ’s’) hear these days pounded into our heads is that we are “not under the Law.” But what does that mean since we are also “under the law of Christ?”
The eternal Word, Christ, has proclaimed to the Corinthians, a city assembly combination of super carnality and saints on fire, this fact through the apostle Paul:
1 Corinthians 9:19-21 For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I may win more. To the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as under the Law though not being myself under the Law, so that I might win those who are under the Law; to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, so that I might win those who are without law.
First, we see Paul as the consummate evangelist. And then he lives in such a way as to not cause anyone to stumble, which is the biblical context and warning of this whole passage from Chapter 8-10.
Let me venture a brief summary of what I personally think it means to be “under the law of Christ.”
No one was ever saved by keeping the Law perfectly. Abraham had no written Law, but the Law was written in his heart (Jer. 31.33). In the gospels, Luke 1.6, it says that Zacharias and Elizabeth walked blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord. Paul made that claim himself.
All these saints were saved by grace through faith. But their works became the proof and needed works for them to endure to the end obediently by grace.
Saints in the Old Covenant made the requested sacrifices as well, confessing sins to the Lord, walking worthy in holiness, also proving their love for God. But they were still saved by grace through faith. So they walked blamelessly in this fashion.
But now in the New Covenant, with the indwelling Holy Spirit, the requirements of God are much more stringent, much more intense. We’re told we can avoid all sin. And that grace is provided to please God in every commandment…flawlessly! Wow.
Being under the law of Christ most likely means as we keep the 2 great commandments (love God and our neighbor), we also keep all the other basic commands of God from the Old Testament, at least the 10 commandments. The whole law is wrapped up in the 2 great commandments as taught by Jesus.
When we do sin as a fluke, not habitually, grace is also available to repent, ask for new resolve and help, and move on with the Spirit! Christ’s blood covers our sin and salvation.
And in living this way we can hear “well done” and walk blamelessly like the OT saints! Hallelujah.
But…in this very passage of Chapters 8-10, Paul warns that he, and us, can be cut off and end up in the lake of fire as a reprobate for causing the eternal “ruin” of another brother (1 Cor. 8.11).
So…true Godly love limits it’s freedom and lives faithfully and joyfully under the law of Christ so that our brethren are helped on in the kingdom of God. They never stumble on account of our lives but are urged on to fight the good fight.
“Our Father in heaven, holy is Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth, as it is always is done in heaven. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever and ever. Amen!”

We live under the New Covenant Law of Life in Christ Jesus. We are free from the Old Covenant of sin and death.

I think this is very balanced in how you present your views. I do believe that Jesus came to fulfill the commandments God has laid out in His scriptures. He knows that we are saved by grace and if we are to live in loving obedience to Him we need that grace even more (Titus 1:12). If it is by works of the law we are certainly in a hopeless state. Praise God though because He empowers us to live holy and godly lives. Thanks for sharing your comments, Shalom. Ken

The Whole Gospel even in the OT!
1 Cor 10: 1 For I want you to know, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.

Brother Greg,
Amen! Yes, even in the OT. Much of that ‘old’ covenant is still in effect and helpful to our walk…and brings pleasure to God our Father!
