The songwriter King David penned this music for God Almighty. As a musician (one who assists people in “musing” on a particular theme), he was prolific in content and theology.
Our brother David has helped us so very much to know, fear, and love God in the way He desires…this psalm in part says:
Psalm 25:12-14 Who is the man who fears the LORD? He will instruct him in the way he should choose. His soul will abide in prosperity, And his descendants will inherit the land. The secret of the LORD is for those who fear Him, and He will make them know His covenant.
When David said “fear” he meant something much more than our current day loose reference to the word ‘reverence.’ That is only a partial definition. He also meant there was an undercurrent that we never want to cross God – at all, anytime.
He is God..we’re not. Many times we think we’re God and He serves us. David knew and understood the difference. Yes, God is tender and merciful. But…
We remember Acts 5 where Ananias and Sapphira are killed by God for lying:
Acts 5:5 (NASB) And as he heard these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last; and great fear came over all who heard of it.
The ‘fear’ here is exactly that…fear…not reverence. They were scared out of their wits, as they should have been! Of course. Ananias’ wife Sapphira was killed a bit later.
And…the dishonoring believers in 1 Corinthians 11 were also killed by God over the Lord’s table sin:
1 Corinthians 11:29-30 (NASB) For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep (were killed by God).
The psalm’s stated benefits to those who rightly fear God?
Instruction in holiness, prosperity of the soul, inheritance of God Himself along with the secret of Godly living, knowing the depths of His covenant with us!
Hallelujah!
“Help us, dear Lord God, to rightly fear You and revere Your holy perfect Name. We pursue You and Your many benefits so graciously given here in Your mighty love!”
