My husband Marc and I were married on July 6th, 2018. We are gloriously happy! Every day is a gift and God has blessed our marriage immeasurably. There are many transitions a new couple have to make when they first get married.
We both were living single lives before we met. That means we had our own way of doing things and were used to doing them all by ourselves. We each had a house and each house was filled with our own personal treasures. Of course, what I saw as a treasure could have been seen by Marc as trash and vice versa.
Now that we became one, we were faced with the challenge of combining or disposing of all of these “treasures”. Both of us were very careful to look at each thing through each other’s eyes. Both of us listened to each other as we talked about various sundry items and why they were so important to us. Some of the things were sentimental, some were precious gifts given to us by a loved one, some reminded us of our youth, some of them offended and had to be disposed of, some we just really liked and some we couldn’t wait to get rid of to make more room.
What I learned through this process was that it is imperative to look at the persons’ you love reasons for their affinity for an object. When I listened to Marc tell me a story about an object, I learned so much about him. His reasons for liking something or disliking it showed me the depth of who he is and I am sure he would attest to the same.
In all of the stories we shared, we laughed, we cried and there were a few times that it caused some consternation. Some of the stories were so heartwarming that I actually fell in love with some of the objects I thought were useless and ugly. They became beautiful to me because this man that I love helped me to see its value from a different perspective.

Some things were still less than desirable, but if they were important to him, they were important to me. I know he has honored me in the same way. So, here we were with 2 houses and a plethora of stuff. We decided to live in Florida in his house and the goal now was to make it our home. We talked and dreamed about how to do that so each of us would love where we lived. We were very different in our design styles, but we both, more than anything, wanted our home to reflect our deep abiding faith.
We know that everything we have is given to us by the Lord so we wanted to make sure that our focus was not on amassing stuff, but to somehow honor God with all that we have, even a tchotchke that seems insignificant. We wanted to make sure that when someone walked into our home that they felt welcome and comfortable and when they left we wanted them to know they had been in a home where God’s Spirit lives.
We set to the work of renovating the entire place with a coastal/glam/farmhouse flair. Through this entire project we shared ideas, problem solved, made some concessions, honored each other and loved each other beyond measure. But more than anything, we have honored God in our behavior and made sure that anything we did would bring Him glory.
We decided that each room we renovated would be dedicated to the Lord. I have decided to put together a series of devotionals that I hope will touch your heart, encourage your spirit and provide you a way to draw closer to the Lord. The title of the series is “Renovating the Spirit, Decorating the Soul”.
