The Word of God is extremely explicit in its warning and condemnation of false teaching. For false teachers and false prophets are the #1 problem in the New Testament record.
Our brother Paul writes to his fellow church planter Titus to take action against the “church” leaders of his day who are “upsetting whole families.” With what? Teachings that bring the reprobates a lot of money. Some things never change, do they beloved?
Titus 1:10-11 For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision (Judean church leaders), who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain.
Paul’s admonition to Titus and his church body on Crete is to silence these leaders. Notice he doesn’t say to pray, live your life and be silent, and keep exhorting them with pious platitudes. No, none of that. The sheep are in danger of wolves.
Who does this? Well, certainly the elders.
Titus 1:9 …(the elders must be) holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
But the body at large is also charged with this as well. That’s all of us. A command from our Lord and Savior.
So, we see that doctrine is vital for it is the evidence of our daily actions, according to Paul. Also, we must be using this correct and holy doctrine to silence the false teachers.
Do you and your family attend a body that does this routinely? Probably not, for I never have in 30 years. But I obey this command individually. And the attacks from the false teachers and prophets who think they have His blessing due to their popularity are voracious at times.
It’s a lonely and tough road for those of us who speak out against the enemies of His church. But He joins us as we walk His walk. Will you join me in this most holy pursuit? After a rebuke to these wayward leaders and if they refuse to hear, we can move on by shaking the dust off our feet. We never cast our pearls before swine.
Hebrews 13:12-14 Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate. So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach. For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come.
Speak up and speak out…for Him! And His kingdom…
The joy is set before us, saints, we bear His reproach, endure our own cross, despise the shame, and enter the final kingdom of Jesus Christ. Amen…
