The estimates are that affluent Christians worldwide, if they are Christians at all, contribute on average only 3% in financial giving. Sometimes that may rise to 10% with a few, and called a “tithe.” Those figures, 3-10%, probably mirror their sacrificial service levels to others too.
And many seem to feel that these amounts discharge our obligation toward Kingdom living. In this digital age, Satan is having a field day using this scheme in distracting many. What’s that again about the camel going through the eye of the needle? The widow and her mite may be the best story on giving ever by a human creature (Mark 12:41-44).
May we be on the alert, and physically prove our verbal professions of loving Jesus.
With all due respect to Judson Van DeVenter and Winfield Weeden who wrote in 1896 the original words and music to this wonderful hymn “I Surrender All,” we offer this telling rewrite:
Verse 1
10% to Jesus I surrender,
10% to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.
Chorus
I surrender 10%, I surrender 10%.
10% to thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender 10%.
Verse 2
10% to Jesus I surrender,
Humbly at His feet I bow,
Worldly pleasures 10% forsaken,
Take me Jesus, take me now.
Chorus
And the well known passage…
Mark 12:41-44 And He (Jesus) sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing (scrutinizing) how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent.
Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury; for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on.”
