GOD’S MARVELOUS GRACE – PART 3 [MONDAY MANNA 48]

June 25, 2007 by Marc Leave a Comment

We appreciate your comments to us on such a vital topic as the grace of God. More next time on the “due” that God expects in return for His great sacrifice. In the meantime, we pick up on the further uses of grace in the New Covenant record, after detailing 1-31 last time.

Remember: we here at Walk Worthy have this word and verse study in a Word document I can attach if you’d like. It’s really rich in truth! Just request it via email.

Let’s take a further look at this treasure chest, this gold mine of truth:

32. “Grace” comes from both the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ – 1 Cor. 1:3

33. “Grace” is given in Christ Jesus so that we’re not lacking in any “gift”  – 1 Cor. 1:4-7

34. We received the Holy Spirit to know the “things freely given” are from God (i.e. the Spirit quenched will mar our ability to know these things) – 1 Cor. 2:12

35. God’s “grace” to Paul allowed him to lay a building foundation and help the assembly, and another to carefully build on his effort – 1 Cor. 3:10

36. Each man has his own “gift” from God – 1 Cor. 7: 7

37. We can partake of food with “thankfulness” (favor = grace) – 1 Cor. 10:10

38. God gives spiritual “gifts” (favors = graces) by the Holy Spirit – 1 Cor. 12:4, 9, 28

39. There’re greater “gifts” (favors = graces) than others – 1 Cor. 12:31

40. By “grace” Paul was called, saved, given his apostleship – 1 Cor. 15:9-10; Gal. 1:15

41. God’s “grace” can be in vain (empty, futile, worthless: 1 Cor. 9:24-27), but proved fruitful to Paul as a co-laborer helping him to labor more than all the other apostles –  1 Cor. 15:9-10

42. “Thanks” be to God the Father who gives and leads us in victory (and triumph) through our Lord Jesus Christ – 1 Cor. 15:57; 2 Cor. 2:14

43. The prayers of many moved God to bestow “favor” upon Paul and his men, causing the giving of thanks by many persons – 2 Cor. 1:11

44. In proud confidence, Paul’s group conducted themselves in holiness and godly sincerity in the “grace” of God – 2 Cor. 1:12

45. We, like the Corinthians, can twice receive a “blessing” (a second grace) by both being hospitable to traveling church planters and workers and helping them on their way (giving them $ for their ministry) – 2 Cor. 1:15-16

46. Knowing Satan’s schemes, we can “forgive”  and comfort others who have repented with godly sorrow after church punishment, so that Satan takes no advantage – 2 Cor. 1:6-11

47. “Grace” spreads to more and more people causing thanks that brings god glory –  2 Cor. 4:15

48. Again, “grace” can be received in vain, so Paul urged others, giving no cause for offense in anything – 2 Cor. 6:1-3

49. The “grace” of God given in the Macedonia assemblies (vs. the self-centered rich Corinthians), even in their great ordeal of affliction (persecution for the Word of God) that their deep poverty and abundance of joy, caused them to give $ beyond their ability for the famine relief of the Jerusalem brethren, a “gracious work” – 2 Cor. 8:1-8

50. Paul admonishes the carnal Corinthians by showing that by His own “grace”, Jesus, although rich, became poor so that we can become spiritually rich by “gracing” others with our deep monetary sacrifice (i.e. when it really hurts to give, really costing something dear to us in “blessing” our brothers and sisters) – 2 Cor. 8:9

51. God is able to make all “grace” abound to those giving $ sacrificially and liberally, so that the receiving brethren in prayer yearn for their contributors because of the surpassing “grace” in the contributors, all giving “thanks” to God for His indescribable gift – 2 Cor. 9:8-15

Saints, please note the breath and depth of Paul’s admonition in regards to financial sacrifice in this letter. This amplifies the commands of Jesus to not lay up treasures on earth, but in heaven. It’s been the experience of many that the poorest people give the most liberally, with the rich giving out of their abundance. Remember Jesus’ teaching:

Mark 12:42-43  A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent. Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury;

Luke 12:20 “But God said to him, ‘you fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’

52. In physical and circumstantial affliction, His “grace” is sufficient since Christ’s immense power, giving the Father great glory, is perfected in our weakness, gladly allowing us to boast of that weakness – 2 Cor. 12:9

53. Even after called by God’s “grace,” believers can desert the Father for a false gospel, causing the false gospel preachers to be cursed by God Himself – Gal. 1:6

54. “Grace” given can be recognized by others – Gal. 2:9

55. “Grace” could be nullified if righteousness ever came through the Law (which is impossible), causing Christ to die needlessly – Gal. 2:21

56. Abraham was “granted” the promise of the inheritance by God, not the Law – Gal. 3:18

57. Those seeking to be justified by the law are severed (cut off, done away, nullified, abolished, rendered inoperative) from Jesus, and have fallen from “grace ” and are lost, vs. those waiting for the hope of righteousness by the Spirit – Gal. 5:4-5

58. The church is predestined by the Father’s will as adopted sons, with “grace” being bestowed upon us, and because of “grace’s” glory, it results in praise for our Father – Eph. 1:5-6

59. Our Father shows the surpassing riches of His “grace” in kindness toward us by resurrecting us with Jesus, seating us now and forever with Jesus in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus (Hallelujah, dear ones!) – Eph. 2:6-7

60. By His “grace,” and through our faith, we’re saved from our sins and the wrath to come, all being a no-works gift from Him, and then as His workmanship, His due from us is the good works He prepared from the foundation of the word that we should walk in them –  Eph. 2: 8-10

61. Paul was given the responsibility of the stewardship (administration, i.e. to make ministry fruitful) of God’s “grace” to benefit the brethren – Eph. 3:2

62. In accord (harmony, in line) with Christ’s gift, each believer is given a specific measure of “grace” – Eph. 4:7

63. We can give “grace” to those who hear our speech by not speaking rotten words and only those that edify based on the moment’s need – Eph. 4:29

64. “Grace” is with all who love our Lord Jesus with a love that has no corruption, i.e. is pure – Eph. 6:24

Every grace today, beloved….

GOD’S MARVELOUS GRACE – PART 2 [MONDAY MANNA 47]

June 18, 2007 by Marc Leave a Comment

Dear brethren,

C.S. Lewis, the famous Christian writer (Mere Christianity, etc.), I’m told was once asked what he thought was the difference between our faith and other religions. “That’s easy,” he replied, “it’s grace.”  I think he meant that all other religions demand a man to perform “works” in order to be approved to some standard initially, some plumb line for beginning salvation.

But we know the truth, beloved:

Ephesians 2:8-9  For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

But lest we be like most teachers these days, we, like Paul, immediately follow this great truth with the result, i.e. the effect in our lives:

Ephesians 2:10  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

But, as we saw last time, God’s grace requires something, as seen in the patron-client relationship. This relationship, if true, flies in the face of our stated notion in the West that God just dispenses things willy-nilly with little or no expected return. We wrote that we must understand the then and there (the past) to fully understand and obey in the here and now. To do the opposite and lead people astray, even if unknowingly, will spell disaster. Why?

James 3:1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment (“greater condemnation” in the KJV).

Recapping from Malina and Rohrbaugh’s magnificent work, Social-Science Commentary on the Synoptic Gospels, “Patronage System in Roman Palestine, “ page 388-90, we find:

“Patron-client systems (exist for) reciprocity between social unequals…(a) person in need (called a client) has his needs met by… a higher-status, well-situated person (called a patron). By granting the favor, the client implicitly promises to pay back the patron whenever and however the patron determines. By granting the favor, the patron, in turn, implicitly promised to be open for further requests at unspecified later times…Brokers mediate between patrons above and clients below…In the Gospels, Jesus often acts as the broker for God…the one through whom clients obtain access to God’s favor… (clients) owe loyalty and public acknowledgment of honor (to the patron) in return…in the new testament the language of grace is the language of patronage.”

Some time ago I posed a scenario to several men who I was teaching about grace. “Suppose I gave you my little 6 year old granddaughter to care for since I was on my way to be martyred for my faith in Jesus.” Now this is a very common scenario throughout history around the world, I explained.

I continued, “Are there any expectations or requirements with this “gift?”

“Yes,” responded a newer believer immediately, for implicit in that “gift” is enormous responsibility. He emphatically stated the gift was not free in the sense we have no reciprocity.

He taught us a principle that we’d all do well to remember.

With this backdrop, we turn to God’s preserved and inspired Word to get a glimpse of what grace really is by His definition, what is it’s intended effect, and what is our responsibility. That is, how do we as lower-status and dependent clients implicitly promise to carry out for (or at least offer ourselves as a minimum) the patron (the Father) whenever and however the patron (the Father) determines? Also, how do we clients owe loyalty and public acknowledgment of honor (to the Father) in return for His favor, His grace?

There’re 4 main Greek words that translate many English words concerning God’s favor, gifting, grace, forgiveness, etc. in the New Testament. The numbers in parenthesis such as (3) indicate the number of times that Greek work is rendered as that specific English word:

Primary Word 1 – charis, khar’-ece;; noun, Greek 5485 NASB; a prim. word; grace, kindness:— blessing(1), concession(1), credit(3), favor(11), gift(1), grace(122), gracious(2), gracious work(3), gratitude(1), thank(3), thankfulness(2), thanks(6).

Word 2  – charisma, khar’-is-mah; noun, Greek 5486, NASB; from Greek 5483; a gift of grace, a free gift:— favor(1), free gift(3), gift(5), gifts(7), spiritual gift(1).

Word 3 – charizomai, khar-id’-zom-ahee; verb, Greek 5483, NASB; from Greek 5485; to show favor, give freely:— bestowed(1), forgave(2), forgive(3), forgiven(4), forgiving(2), freely give(1), gave(1), given(1), graciously forgave(1), granted(4), hand(2), things freely given(1).

Word 4 – charitoo, khar-ee-to’-o; verb, Greek 5487, NASB; from Greek 5485 (charis); to make graceful, endow with grace:- favored(1), freely bestowed(1).

We here at Walk Worthy have this word and verse study in a 17 page document I can attach if you’d like. It’s really rich in truth! Just request it via email.

GOD’S MARVELOUS GRACE – PART 1 [MONDAY MANNA 46]

June 11, 2007 by Marc 2 Comments

Beloved,

As with most things in my Christian life while living here in America, and in the West, I’m having to relearn what God’s Word really teaches about the Kingdom of God. The Holy Spirit knows I (and many more of you worldwide) yearn for God’s true truth. He knows the handicap we all labor under in this culture because of its worldwide false teaching conjured up and leading to a false identity of the God who is.

The great I AM…

When you think of grace, what comes to mind? Unmerited (i.e. free) favor with no requirements? With absolutely no limits whatsoever? No rules? Complete freedom? Covering any and all sin? For all time? That’s what I was taught. And I believed it lock, stock, and barrel.

But is it so?

First of all, any basic understanding of grace (or any other part of God and His kingdom) described in His Word would need to discover what God intended when He wrote it; i.e. the then and there.  I mean the historical context. If we just look at our current modern times, the here and now, without first evaluating the then and there, we’re in for big trouble.

Unfortunately, most of the things Americans and Westerners are taught are through the tainted lenses of our culture and times first. I’ve relearned much the hard way, previously having been a naïve fool. God knows my heart in this, and has applied His grace to see me through thus far!

So, then, what might be at least one overriding concept of such importance in the past, the then and there, that God choose to deposit many of His truths within?  I believe it’s the Patronage System, which  was a mid-eastern idea but also much in play here in the West. It’s absolutely crucial in understanding our God, how He operates, and what He expects from His creatures.

Why is it so important? Because the Patronage System is not a free, independent system in the final analysis. It has very specific expectations, both for the Patron (the person in charge of favors) and the Client (the person in need). Oh yes, there’s one other vital player in this theater – the Broker (the person who mediates between Patrons above and Clients below).

It’s absolutely essential for eternal life to know who God really is, and His role, who we are, and our role with Him. I’m afraid we often have the two roles reversed, i.e. He serving us is foremost in  our minds.

I quote in part from Malina and Rohrbaugh’s magnificent work, Social-Science Commentary on the Synoptic Gospels, “Patronage System in Roman Palestine,” page 388-90:

“Patron-client systems are socially fixed relations of generalized reciprocity between social unequals in which the lower-status person in need (called a client) has his needs met by having recourse for favors to a higher-status, well-situated person (called a patron). By granting the favor, the client implicitly promises to pay back the patron whenever and however the patron determines. By granting the favor, the patron, in turn, implicitly promised to be open for further requests at unspecified later times…By entering a patron-client arrangement, the client relates his patron as to a superior and more powerful kinsman, while the patron sees to his clients as to his dependents.”

So far, we see then that the client must pay back the favor, and the terms are open-ended depending on the patron’s desire. In the end, there’s no free ride.

Please hear me closely: our salvation is by grace and not of works. That is very very clear. And Ephesians 2:10 states we are His workmanship that we should walk in the good works He prepared beforehand. Also, it’s vital to preach that faith without works is dead. You may recall Martin Luther was dead set against the Epistle of James, falsely calling it “straw.”

Malina and Rohrbaugh continue:

“Patrons, then, are powerful individuals who control resources and are expected to use their positions to hand out favors to inferiors based on ‘friendship,’ personal knowledge, and favoritism…Brokers mediate between patrons above and clients below. First-order resources – land, jobs, goods, funds, and power – are all controlled by patrons. Second-order resources – strategic contact with or access to patrons – are controlled by brokers who mediate the goods and services the patron has to offer…In the Gospels, Jesus often acts as the broker for God, the one through whom clients obtain access to God’s favor. An example is Matt. 8:13 (between Jesus and the centurion’s servant). “

We now begin to see more clearly the role that Jesus has in offering access to the Father, but on certain conditions. Friendship was crucial, and implied strict guidelines. Again we see as they write:

“Clients are those dependent on the largesse of patrons or brokers to survive well in their society. They owe loyalty and public acknowledgment of honor in return…Note that according to Matthew and Luke, one cannot be client to both God and the wealth system (Matt. 6:24, Luke 16:13)…(In Luke 7:1-10 we see the centurion that acts as a patron for the local population, yet)  he signals to Jesus that he doesn’t not intend to make Jesus a client (“I am not worthy..”), but considers Him a superior. Surprised, Jesus acknowledges the centurion has placed faith in Him as broker of the resources of God and hence heals the servant.”

Finally, we see the role of grace in the Patronage System:

“In the New Testament the language of grace is the language of patronage. God is the ultimate patron whose resources are graciously given, often mediated through Jesus as broker…He (Jesus) also sends out a core group of His faction, the Twelve, to function as brokers of divine grace (Mark 6:7-13).”

In conclusion, what can we learn from this description of patronage? God operates within this system in His Word, using Jesus as His broker. Those entering in to His patronage system were “graced.” He expects something in return for His favor, i.e. obedient faith and unswerving loyalty to go and sin no more, counting the cost beforehand, praise, and honor, etc.

We, like the Twelve before us, are commanded to also act as brokers of divine grace.

A logical question might be: is this normal for our modern times, that is, is this eternal, or has something changed over the years, and this was only temporary back then? I think it’s His plan for all times based on His story to us. Much of His Word, and His principles, are timeless and applicable to His creatures for their short stay here on His earth.

In Hebrews 4:12 the inspired writer reports:

For the word of god is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

I leave you with two separate translations of a vital verse dealing with grace. The operative verb is the Greek word charitoo. I normally quote the New American Standard Updated version. But in this case, I think the old KJV more accurately describes grace in light of the patronage system. So, we take a peek at both:

Ephes. 1:6 – New American Standard – to the praise of the glory of His (the Father) grace, which He (the Father) freely bestowed (charitoo) on us in the Beloved (Jesus).

Ephes. 1:6 – King James – To the praise of the glory of His (the Father) grace, wherein He (the Father) hath made us accepted (charitoo) in the Beloved (Jesus).

Here in the KJV rendering we see the father has made us acceptable, i.e. favored us with special honor.

The verb “charitoo” is used one more time the NT record:

Luke 1:28  And coming in, he (Gabriel) said to her (Mary), “Greetings, favored one (charitoo)! The Lord is with you.”

Next time we’ll begin diving into the many verses in the Holy Scriptures that show us much more about God’s marvelous grace! Will you begin this week to go ahead of me and have the Spirit guide you in looking at grace and its role in His Word?!

A prime role of grace is defined:

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.” Titus 2:11-15
