DENYING CHRIST BEFORE MEN – SCORSESE’S SILENCE MOVIE IS DEAD WRONG [MONDAY MANNA 170]

January 23, 2017 by jesusislord Leave a Comment

Rodriques with a martyr

Dear saints,

It is fashionable these days in the western and American gospel to dumb down and defang the Almighty of His powerful judgment attributes. The new and “safe” Trinity can be described as the soft and cuddly baby manger Jesus, the indulgent and materialistic “bless me, bless me” Santa Claus Holy Spirit, and the kill-our-enemies Rambo Father.

You have to look no farther than the average church gathering and just eavesdrop on just about any conversation for confirmation. Or…often we can look to Hollywood for more distortion in the true identity of God.

I was urged by a close family member who claims Christ and is a church elder that I needed to see Martin Scorsese’s film Silence. He said in all sobriety that it had made a tremendous impact and the suffering of the Japanese saints in the 1600’s was mind boggling.

Now a brief disclaimer: I love to watch movies on the big screen cinema, but seldom do since the content or themes are so ungodly. Often, they are downright evil. But I saw this movie on the recommendation of this brother in the Lord.

Martyrs slowly tortured

In the movie, Father Rodriques is played by Andrew Garfield, and Father Ferreira is played by Liam Neeson. Both apostate from the Christian faith due to the suffering of the saints, and that one may do so and still somehow honor Christ and inherit eternal life. Also, you must endure the whole catholic heresy of a human mediator in lieu of the Savior and Lord of the world. The visual suffering is difficult to watch to say the least.

But the worst thing is that the movie claims that Rodriques denied the Lord for years yet the final scene after he has died shows a cross in his hands as his body is cremated. The signal is clear: one may deny Christ to all men, even aiding and abetting His enemy Satan, all the while living silently as a Christian, i.e. in “silence.”

The Holy Scriptures tell a completely different story, don’t they? They are not vague in the least in this doctrine. Here is our Lord speaking. Please pay careful attention to the context.

Luke 12:4-9 “I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him! Are not five sparrows sold for two cents? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.

“And I say to you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will confess him also before the angels of God; but he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God…”

Notice this tough love message is proclaimed to His friends who are to fear the Father who casts people into hell. Those who confess Jesus Christ before men inherit eternal life and its vast rewards. Conversely, those who deny Him before men are denied eternal life.

Could it be any more clear?

I guess not since many Christians and institutions of learning are fawning all over this movie. Am I surprised? Yes and no. Yes, in that our Lord is commanding oral confession. No, since in my 30+ years as a serious believer I have seen so much bad teaching not much surprises me anymore. I am not alone in this.

Julie Roys of The Christian Post wrote a movie review on Silence. She rightly states that the scenes describing the faith unto death of the saints are moving. I was riveted as I viewed their courage. It confirmed and increased my faith since this sort of persecution is on its way to the west. It has been continuous in some cultures for thousands of years and is a way of life for millions of souls.

I was hoping the movie would end well. As already described, it did not with the leaders denying Christ before men.

Roys puts in this way.

I tend to agree with the historic church position that the sin of apostasy can be forgiven. But I am less willing to concede that someone who for decades suppressed his faith, and even colluded with persecutors of the church, would inherit the Kingdom of heaven.

She concludes with this.

To my eyes, though, all Silence portrays is weakness. There is no triumph because triumph comes in enduring to the end. Jesus would not have triumphed had he gotten off the cross, knowing that his death and resurrection would eventually lead to the brutal execution of all but one of his apostles…

I don’t think Silence presents a helpful spiritual message, but a potentially harmful one. Yes, it has redeeming qualities. And yes, the questions it raises are worth considering — but in the right context and among believers mature enough to handle its problematic themes. But as a feature film, it’s pretty depressing and potentially disillusioning. Rather than exaltation, it features capitulation. And rather than inspiring, it simply deflates and confuses.

I will be more blunt. The movie is heresy of the first order. I am deeply grieved that the close brother in the Lord who recommended it to me could not see this obvious and colossal blunder.

But alas. No.

This type of subtle compromise is a close cousin to another dumbed down Jesus heresy. And what is that?

That suicide – self murder – is just fine with the baby manger Jesus. Really?

Remember who said this?

Matthew 24:13 “But the one who endures (abides, remains, and perseveres under great pressure) to the end, he will be saved…”

Many many years ago I had a best friend in the faith in central Florida. He and I spoke every day for some years. He was a financial planner and consultant to Christians. He eventually began transferring large sums of money from his clients to another top Christian investment group in Atlanta.

So what’s wrong with that, you say. Trouble is he was skimming money off the top for years in order to live a more fancy life. It is called a Ponzi scheme and is a felony. Later I was to find he had already been arrested decades before for a similar but smaller crime, and was just given a slap on the wrist while avoiding prison time.

For over a year before the final phone call he refused to meet with me or return my calls. It was very strange and downright hurtful. I was confused and angry at times that this would happen – again – to me by a supposed close Christian friend.

I distinctly remember where I stood when I took the final call. Another close brother grimly said this man had committed suicide.

Picture in the casket

He left behind a devastated sexy second wife after his adulterous relationship with her ended his first marriage.  Several grown children from the first marriage were shocked beyond description. I had come to know them all. He had visited the children the night before and left them notes. Then he drove to another Florida city to a prearranged hotel room where he emptied a bottle of sleeping pills and went to sleep. He did this to escape the local newspapers when they found his dead body the next day.

At his wake, his wife had placed on the dead man’s chest in the open casket a picture of Jesus hugging a man in heaven. The signal was obvious – they sought to proclaim the image he “made it.” I was sick to my stomach then, and all the way back home. Later I found out he had stolen a millions dollars from the unsuspecting saints. It was all gone.

My ex-best friend and ex-Christian brother was a thief. And a practicing liar to boot. I felt the agonizing pain of betrayal once again.

Remember who said this?

Revelation 21:8 “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

At his funeral at the local Baptist mega church, all the speakers praised the “fact” that this man was in heaven. I was stunned. Not to be outdone, one brother who I also knew well and was a confidant of the dead man said from the stage that is was just fine to practice sin like this. He mentioned a perverted idea loosely based on the 1 Corinthians 3 apostle church planter purifying fire passage that you could be “singed but in.”

I was horrified.

We must be true to His holy Name. To proclaim the excellencies, His truth, at all times and at all costs. Nothing less will do for His true friends, His servants, His slaves.

Again, our Lord’s voice echoes now the canyons of time. It is not the voice of the baby manger Jesus, but the voice of the risen God that our brother the apostle John heard. Remember John’s reaction when he saw Him?

Revelation 1:17a When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man…”

Let us never be seduced by a movie heresy, or an ugly suicide. Or any other perversion of the heart of the Ancient of Days.

His voice still warns us. This is the face of real love. Calvary love…

Luke 21:34-36 “Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap; for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth.

“But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

WHEN YOU HAVE TO STAND ALONE – BY CRAIG KEENER [AT THE BATTLE FRONT 128]

May 12, 2015 by jesusislord Leave a Comment

SojournerIIBrothers and sisters,

In our modern “everything is fine and happy” Christian culture, the notion of standing alone is foolishness. Just this past year, I had a very close family member rebuke me for sending her a song about standing alone with God.

Lest we forget, the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ declares through the Spirit that we are called to suffer. Here brother Keener gives and impassioned declaration for our exhortation and to help us press on in Him.

And to that extent, we’re never completely “alone.”

WHEN YOU HAVE TO STAND ALONE – BY CRAIG KEENER

“Wrap up your garment for action. Get up and tell them everything that I myself command you. Don’t be scared of them … Today I myself have established you like a fortified city, an iron pillar or a bronze wall against the entire land—against the kings of Judah, its leaders, its priests and the land’s people. They’ll fight you but won’t overpower you, for I myself am with you to keep you safe” (Jer 1:17-19)

Have you ever felt like you had only a few allies in sharing Christ with others, or in standing for something that is true? We hear a lot about “community” these days, and community is a wonderful blessing. But what happens when you are in a setting where most people disagree with your faith or ignore a clear message from God?

Jeremiah’s situation was worse than that. He was nearly alone in proclaiming God’s message. The other prophets of his day were encouraging the people that because God was their God he wouldn’t judge them. Jeremiah thus had to stand alone with the unpopular message of impending judgment, while all the other prophets told everyone what they wanted to hear.

Jeremiah had to let God’s people know that they were breaking God’s covenant, and that God would judge them—though someday God promised a new covenant that they wouldn’t break. Jeremiah did have a few allies—Baruch the scribe, who wrote his prophecies, and a foreigner, Ebed-melech from Africa.

But he was mostly alone, and most people didn’t like him. He also couldn’t feel comfortable simply taking life easy like many around him. “Because your hand was on me, I had to keep to myself, for you filled me with your fury of judgment,” Jeremiah complained (Jer 15:17).

God had been patient with his people for a long time, but finally he was getting ready to discipline them. In fact, once they were exiled and had to learn to live in a pagan environment, they would learn to value the true God who was their only hope for the future. But why did Israel deserve punishment so much?

Scripture told them that they were supposed to love God wholly—and thus abstain from other gods (Deut 6:4-5). Because of this whole-hearted devotion to God, they were to meditate on his Word always. They were supposed to talk about his commands at home and when outside (a nice Hebrew way of saying, wherever they were), and when they lay down and when they got up (a nice Hebrew way of saying, all the time; 6:6-9).

God warned them not to forget, when he blessed them in the land, that he had liberated them from slavery (6:10-12). But now his people had done just that—abandoning him, the source of flowing water, and digging broken water tanks for themselves that couldn’t even hold any water (Jer 2:13).

For the most part, only the priests and especially scribes were literate. Only they could teach God’s law to the people. Yet the literate people themselves neglected the law (Jer 5:4-5; cf. Isa 29:11-12), and the people followed their traditional customs without even realizing that they had forsaken the teaching of God’s Word. The entire nation had become corrupt (Jer 5:1-5), and someone needed to call the people back to the truths of Scripture.

This meant that history was at a very serious juncture. Israel was called to be a light to the nations (Isa 42:6); if they were blind (42:18-20), God’s light could be extinguished in the world. Jeremiah thus stood as a lone voice in a pivotal moment of history, like Noah or Abraham before him. Later, Jesus similarly called people prophetically to truth; in his day, the religious leaders knew the Bible but interpreted it through traditions that missed God’s heart (Mark 7:6-8, 13).

In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus’s own disciples continually fail to understand his mission, appearing spiritually half-blind (8:17-18), even falling asleep just before his arrest. Jesus had to stand alone for the truth of his mission, while planting and nurturing the seeds of the future.

Paul was not quite so alone—he usually had a circle of colleagues who helped him—but sometimes Paul also had to go against others’ convictions to stand for the truth. That’s why Gentile Christians don’t have to be circumcised today! Near the time of his death, Paul laments that the Roman province of Asia, where he had expended his labors most successfully, had turned away from him (2 Tim 1:15), though even there some were not embarrassed by his arrest (1:16).

Paul entrusts the future there especially to Timothy, who must pass the message on to others (2:1-2). In antiquity men often married in hopes of having a male heir. Timothy was the son that Paul had never had (1:2; 2:1); Paul said he had no one like him, totally devoted to Christ’s concerns (Phil 2:20-22).

Like Jeremiah, Paul never lived to see all the fruit of his labors. Yet his letters survived him as a source of renewal to the church ever since. Likewise, although even the remnant of Judah disobeyed God’s message and dragged Jeremiah with them to Egypt, the next generation recognized Jeremiah as a true prophet of the Lord. Generations after him recognized that God fulfilled his promises given through Jeremiah (2 Chron 36:22; Ezra 1:1; Dan 9:2). From Jeremiah’s day onward, Israel never again turned to physical idols.

When Jeremiah was young, Judah experienced revival. In the ancient world, peoples often preserved foundation documents in the masonry of temples, and that’s where workers found the neglected book of the law (2 Kgs 22:8). When King Josiah, now twenty-six years old, heard the law read by the court scribe, he didn’t make excuses for the people or try to explain away the message in light of how God’s people had long been living.

He didn’t turn it into a daily devotional reading as if merely reading it fulfilled its purpose. No, he ripped his royal cloak in mourning, recognizing that God’s people were headed for certain judgment. Then he sent to the prophetess Huldah to hear God’s message for his generation (22:11-13). God blessed his moral reform and delayed judgment, but by this point Israel was too enmeshed in sin for judgment to be turned back permanently (22:15-20).

Josiah died young, and his successors were not committed enough to God to continue his devotion to God’s book. It fell to Jeremiah to summon his generation back from the brink of destruction. Though by the end of his life it looked like Jeremiah had failed, his message was vindicated and ultimately it prevailed; God’s word did not return empty. Eventually Jeremiah’s book even made it into the Bible; he was the only prophet of his time and place who told the truth.

KEENER CRAIG

Brother Craig Keener

Today we have Bibles but we often interpret them by how the rest of the church is living, instead of interpreting how people are living in light of the Bible. Will you stand firm to make a difference for God in your generation? Even if you have to stand virtually alone? You can succeed if you walk with God and know, as God told Jeremiah, “I’m with you to help you” (Jer 1:19).
