This may be one of the most vital topics we’ve ever addressed.
All of life is about identity, and all the people and things in which we actively pursue knowingly or unknowingly as identification of who we are as a human being. How we live, what we say, what and who we spend time with, what we wear on our bodies – everything.
So then, do you consider yourself a saint…or sinner? And what are we primarily taught to embrace as our identity in Christ?
In the holy scriptures, the Lord declares through the apostles Peter and Jude a dire warning:
2 Peter 2:1-2 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. Many will follow their sensuality (licentiousness: license, permission, wantonness), and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned (blasphemed, reviled, dishonored)…
Jude 1:3-4 Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints. For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
It would appear obvious then in the first passage in 2 Peter that these teachers and prophets (those calling God’s people back to holiness) are false, not true, and in secret infected the Lord’s body with heresies. These heresies split people in factions, sects, i.e. having a party spirit and stonewalling the truth.
The result? Many, not a few, follow their sinful wantonness, their disorder, their looseness, and God’s truth, about Christ and His kingdom, is reviled, dishonored.
Some things never change, beloved.
In the Jude passage we again see the same theme. The “certain persons” crept in unnoticed. That is, no one sounded the alarm at the time of their entrance into the love feasts, the home church meetings in the New Covenant. They turn the marvelous sin-preventing grace of Almighty Father into license, looseness…and sin always begets more sin.
Now…these certain persons also never announce “we deny the Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.” For if they had, they would never have crept in unnoticed. But by their teachings and actions they deny the true Truth, the Lord Jesus. And cause many others to stumble and fall away, or depart from the faith (1 Timothy 4).
That brings us to today. What do you hear from fellow believers and the big gun teachers regarding sin?
You’re “just a sinner.” And Paul in Romans 7 was a “wretched man.” So what can God expect? I even know brothers who say and teach others that they are lifelong sinners, and expect to sin every day, all day.
But what does the Word of the Lord reveal to us? And, just as important, are we contending earnestly (not casually) for the faith as Jude admonished us? What secretly introduced destructive heresies are introduced today? Do any of these turn the powerful sin-breaking loving grace of Jesus Christ into the opposite: sin and more sin and more sin?
As a person thinks, so is he.
If you’re a “sinner,” then you sin. It’s your nature, right? It’s what’s natural.
But…what if you’re a partaker of the divine nature, having forever escaped the ‘sin nature’ and its corruption?
2 Peter 1:4 For by these (His power and knowledge) He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.
A royal priesthood, a holy people, that then evangelizes the world?
1 Peter 2:9 But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
Saints…the “holy ones.”
That’s the only term used to identify the new person, the new man (and woman) that was crucified, buried, and risen with Christ while seated in the heavens with Him at His right hand.
Wait, you say. What about Paul’s life in Romans 7 and his claim to be the worst of sinners in 1 Timothy?
As we shall see, both of those are his past life, when he was unsaved.
So, do you want to be called and experience these things below as a “sinner?” There’s 66 occurrences of that term, and we list them at the very end of this piece – and it’s not pretty in any way, shape, or form.
…wicked exceedingly and sinners against the LORD; go and utterly destroy the sinners; how blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners; my son, if sinners entice you, do not consent; adversity pursues sinners; but transgressors and sinners will be crushed together; behold, the day of the LORD is coming…and He will exterminate its sinners from it; all the sinners of My people will die by the sword; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners; but others were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?”…
And again…
…realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane; for it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; for consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart; AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE GODLESS MAN AND THE SINNER?; to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him…
Enough, already. A very deadly state to be living in, no?
If you live in the flesh, you must die spiritually. Still want to be called and identify yourself as a “sinner?”
Romans 8:12-13 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Or called and experience these things as a saint?
As for the saints who are in the earth, they are the majestic ones in whom is all my delight; O fear the LORD, you His saints; for to those who fear Him there is no want; but the saints of the Highest One will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, for all ages to come; and the time arrived when the saints took possession of the kingdom; then the sovereignty, the dominion and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he did to Your saints at Jerusalem; to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints; but now, I am going to Jerusalem serving the saints; to the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling…
And again…
…or do you not know that the saints will judge the world?; for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints; for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; so that He may establish your hearts without blame in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints; I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints; When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints; Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints; and in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints and of all who have been slain on the earth.
By now it should be obvious. We see 69 occurrences of the word “saints” in the New Covenant record. A lot. And they too are listed first at the end of this piece.
We’re to go and sin no more…so that nothing worse will happen to us. And what is the “nothing worse?”
God means it, saints. He truly does.
John 5:14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.”
Ok. So what about Paul’s words in Romans 7 and 1 Timothy?
I mentioned earlier it was his past life. God is very specific with His Word, His Son, and we never use interpretation by exception. Or proof texting by taking a couple of passages and ignoring dozens of clearly understood text.
Jesus Christ, our Lord, indeed commands us to walk worthy of His Name. His all-consuming power by the Father’s decree is available to us for this great work. And His commands are never a burden!
In Biblical interpretation, or Hermeneutics, we always go from the specific (69 occurrences of saints) first, and then to the general ( 2 passages that don’t seem to fit) for understanding of God’s intention for His kingdom, His eternal purpose.
Brother Craig Keener, in his marvelous work The IVP Bible Background Commentary, states:
Many commentators have thought that Romans 7:14-25 describes Paul’s struggle with sin at the time he was writing the passage, because he uses present-tense verbs. But diatribe style, which Paul uses in much of Romans, was graphic in its images, and Paul in the context has been describing his past life under law (Romans 7:7-13). Thus it is more likely that Paul contrasts the spiritual worthlessness of religious introspection and self-centeredness (count the “I’s” and “me’s”) in Romans 7 with the life of the Spirit by grace in Romans 6 and Romans 8.
Then, The Complete Biblical Library makes this claim regarding Romans 7:
The contrast between chapters 7 and 8 is most significant. In chapter 7 the pronoun “I” occurs 31 times (KJV) without one mention of the Holy Spirit, unless verse 6 refers to the newness He brings. Obviously “I” am struggling to do and completely failing for it is an attempt in my own strength. In chapter 8 the Holy Spirit is mentioned at least 20 times. In chapter 8 law is scarcely mentioned while there are 20 references to law in chapter 7.
And the best in-depth teaching of Romans 7 and Paul’s past life is offered by brother Daniel Thompson. You may read his excellent writing and listen to his live teaching here.
Sin is never, ever habitual. Sin in your life is a fluke. It’s a rarity in God’s kingdom for His citizens.
Do you believe it to be true without looking at you experience?
Brother Mike Pearl teaches on the power of God’s Holy Spirit that we’re sanctified by faith and walk in that newness of life. His audio teaching changed my life, as I pray it will yours too. You may listen carefully to it here.
Those of you who follow us here at Walk Worthy will remember this story of our long-time brother with serious health issues who came to visit us many years ago in the country for natural health care help. When I recounted this great truth and brother Pearl’s outstanding teaching at the kitchen table, he smirked at me and said, “Is this like the ‘power of positive thinking,’ Marc?”
I was shocked that he would dismiss this command of our Lord lock, stock, and barrel. I gathered my wits, asked God for help and asked him, “Brother, do you believe God will help you right now with any sin that holds you, and that you can go and sin no more?”
“No,” he quickly replied, with the smirk widening across his face.
“Well, then, be it done to you according to your faith,” was my admonishment back to him. I was surprised the Spirit responded in that fashion.
And what about you, dear one?
Are you still now a “sinner?”
No.
You’re a saint, a holy one, and never, ever a sinner. Never again.
Listen to and read these resources and let our Father God completely transform your walk with Him in Christ. Believe it, and walk in your holy sanctification.

Yes, we always thought we were saints, and not sinners! If we think and act as sinners, then it condones our sin. And our Lord hates sin.
Keep up the good work, Walk Worthy!
