In Part 1 of this teaching, we learned the following 12 points:
What is the spirit? Can we physically see it? What does it do?
Our spirit is:
- a place somewhere in a physical human being, the whole man.
- where we’re most open, sensitive, and responsive to supernatural things.
- where God and other supernatural spirits, both good and evil, most immediately encounter, relate with power, and interact with us.
- where our soul (mind, will, and emotions or personality) is engaged and we experience firsthand supernatural power (a force, ability, or might) with messages and signals when relating to the spiritual realm.
- where we then experience spiritual reality beyond both human observation and control.
- the actual place of residence of Jesus’ Holy Spirit.
- where we’re also most open, sensitive, and responsive to demonic influence.
- always filled and controlled by some force: either our own flesh, a demonic spirit(s), and/or God’s Holy Spirit.
- extremely fascinating to other spiritual people like New Agers, Occultists, Buddhists, and Jehovah’s Witnesses.
- of extreme value and importance in the East vs. the West as witnessed by all their spiritual idols that connect them to the demonic spirit world.
- a mystery at best to created finite human beings who want to “see” everything.
- one special attribute that lives on for eternity long after our physical death.
Now, let’s turn our attention to what our spirit does…
Our spirit can take in, create, feel, and react to many emotions and situations. Here’s a brief tour of the Word concerning this fact…
A spirit can drink in the “poison” of God’s discipline:
Job 6:4 “For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, Their poison my spirit drinks;”
A spirit in anguish that finds its way out in spoken word:
Job 7:11 I will speak in the anguish of my spirit,
A faint and overwhelmed spirit, one that can fail us at times:
Psalm 77:3 When I sigh, then my spirit grows faint.
Psalm 142:3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, You knew my path.
Psalm 143:7 Answer me quickly, O Lord, my spirit fails; Do not hide Your face from me,
A broken spirit, even crushed:
Job 17:1 “My spirit is broken, my days are extinguished, The grave is ready for me.
Psalm 34:18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted. And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
Proverbs 15:13 But when the heart is sad, the spirit is broken.
Proverbs 15:4 A soothing tongue is a tree of life, But perversion in it crushes the spirit.
Proverbs 17:22 But a broken spirit dries up the bones.
Proverbs 18:14 But as for a broken spirit who can bear it?
A spirit that ponders:
Psalm 77:6 I will meditate with my heart, And my spirit ponders:
A humble spirit:
Proverbs 29:23 A man’s pride will bring him low, But a humble spirit will obtain honor.
1 Peter 3:8 To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit;
A gentle spirit:
1 Cor. 4:21 Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love and a spirit of gentleness?
Philip. 4:5 Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near.
A patient spirit:
Eccles. 7:8 Patience of spirit is better than haughtiness of spirit.
For women, the inner heart is gentle and quiet, not aggressive and brassy, not contentious:
1 Peter 3:4 but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.
We can turn our spirit against and away from our very Creator
Job 15:13 That you should turn your spirit against God
Psalm 78:8 And whose spirit was not faithful to God.
Proverbs 25:28 Is a man who has no control over his spirit.
We can turn to God for help with our spirit:
Psalm 31:5 Into Your hand I commit my spirit;
Psalm 51:12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation; And sustain me with a willing spirit.
Proverbs 1:23 “Turn to my reproof, Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you;
God cares for our spirit, and renews it:
Job 10:12 ‘You have granted me life and lovingkindness; And Your care has preserved my spirit.
Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Psalm 51:12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And sustain me with a willing spirit.
A deeply moved spirit, one that is troubled, one that is provoked, one that is not at rest:
John 11:33 (Jesus) was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled,
John 13:21 (Jesus) became troubled in spirit
Acts 17:16 (Paul) his spirit was being provoked within him as he was observing the city full of idols.
2 Cor. 2:13 I had no rest for my spirit, not finding Titus my brother
A spirit that knows the thoughts of men:
1 Cor. 2:11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man
A spirit that can be saved for heaven itself, instead of eternal torment in hell:
1 Cor. 5:5 so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
A spirit that speaks mysteries when speaking in tongues, and prays, sings and blesses with the spirit:
1 Cor. 14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue…but in his spirit he speaks mysteries…I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also…you bless in the spirit
A spirit that is refreshed:
1 Cor. 16:18 For they have refreshed my spirit and yours. Therefore acknowledge such men.
2 Cor. 7:13 (Titus) his spirit has been refreshed by you all.
A spirit that is full of the grace of Jesus:
Galatians 6:18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.
2 Tim. 4:22 The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.
Philemon 1:25 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
A spirit that is made wise and knowledgeable by the Father, and by His word:
Ephes. 1:17 ..may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
A sinful, untested spirit of error can be received:
2 Cor. 11:4 you receive a different spirit…or a different gospel which you have not accepted,
1 John 4:1-2 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God,
1 John 4:6 he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
A spirit that is standing firm in unity…or in denominational sin:
Philip. 1:27 Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
Philip. 2:2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.
Philip. 2:20 For I have no one else of kindred (same minded) spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare.
A spirit that’s bold and made alive by Christ:
2 Tim. 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.
1 Peter 3:18 …made alive in the spirit;
The spirit can be kept holy, and it can seek Him, it can be fervent, it can serve Him:
Job 32:18 “For I am full of words; The spirit within me constrains me.
Psalm 32:2 And in whose spirit there is no deceit!
Proverbs 16:32 And he who rules his spirit,
Isaiah 26:9 At night my soul longs for You, Indeed, my spirit within me seeks You diligently;
Acts 18:25 (Apollos)….. being fervent in spirit,
Romans 12:11 not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;
Romans 1:9 For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son,
1 Cor. 7:34 that she may be holy both in body and spirit;
2 Cor. 7:1 let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
A spirit that’s sober and looking heavenward, not full of silly talk or coarse jesting, nor modern depreciating “humor” which will allow Satan to devour you:
1 Peter 1:13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 4:7 The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.
1 Peter 5:8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Hallelujah! Praise our Lord….
