It seems very strange indeed to many of us in modern times that the Lord Jesus Christ, God Himself, would declare His Father to be “My God.”
Here we read:
John 20:17 Jesus said to her (Mary Magdalene), “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.'”
So then, it appears that the mid-eastern theme of honoring our Father is well intact as an eternal doctrine of God. Perfect submission to the Father even as Jesus Himself was the Eternal God in the flesh is the norm.
One thing that always strikes me when I read the Gospels, and John in particular, is the fact that Jesus talks about and acts so humbly toward the Father… “My Father” He declares. He always seems lower in position to the Father..but still fully God in equality. And never, ever, did anything without the Father telling and leading Him.
Never. Not once…
Our perfect submission to Jesus Christ is also to the Father as His Spirit leads us in holy ways on the narrow road to final salvation. If, as God, Jesus called Him ‘My God,’ how much more do we in humility submit to His sovereign ways?
We are saved, we’re being saved, we will be saved! All by and through His marvelous eternal favor. Hallelujah…praise God the Father.
“Once again, dear Jesus our Lord, will thank and praise You for Your leadership in humility and grace. If You called You Father ‘My God’ in submission, please help us to do the same in a perfectly mature way.”

Great post! While it is way beyond out comprehension, to my understanding, our Lord stripped Himself of His divinity. He took it off as a cloak and left it with His Father (‘the glory that I had with Thee’). I believe that He was totally man, but born with a living spirit, whereas man, since Adam had/has all been born with a dead spirit. So in that sense the Father was His God. For the most part, believers are so glib with the name of God and even the Lord Jesus. It is hard to absorb how He could lay aside His glory and become as we are. Wonder of wonders! I guess the best thing is to not try to fathom it but to bow and worship!!
