In the garden that fateful night of His painful betrayal, Jesus receives the “kiss of death” from his once brotherly friend Judas Iscariot. Immediately after, the disciples want to defend Jesus violently. Obviously, they have not applied the love your enemy truth yet since the indwelling Holy Spirit had not arrived to help them obey.
“Lord (master of our lives), shall we strike with the sword?” Jesus responds quickly and verbally first before the supernatural healing after Peter tried to cut off the head of a fellow human being, slave Malchus, capturing ‘only’ his ear.
“Stop! No more of this,” replies God Himself. He who lives by the sword will die by the sword, declares the truth of Jesus. He didn’t say, “Good job so far, Peter. But let’s take off his head too!”
Do you hear that, Christian? Stop. No more of this…we are never more like Satan himself when we react in physical violence. And never more like God when we pray to Him in our desperate circumstances for deliverance and sustenance.
Just this morning in the grocery store, a clerk I know there reacted sheepishly under conviction as I declared to him the satanic violence in the sports world after he was openly proclaiming that vice as a self-professed Christian.
Vanquishing the enemy. Blood on the field. Teaching our kids this is just a rite of passage into adulthood. Of course, all in the name of “good natured competition,” they claim. Shame on us. What a brilliant scheme of our arch enemy. He is a supernatural genius.
“As for me and my house, Lord, we’ll serve You and Your kingdom alone. Deliver us from all of Satan’s schemes for us to live full faced in Your blessed holy image. May our lives be filled with bold action, complete obedience, and hearing You when You command us with ‘Stop! No more of this.’”
Your friend and brother in fighting the good fight,
Marc
