We all know the beloved disciple and apostle of the Lord Himself know as John. He’s described as one who was in the bosom of God when He trod the earth as a human being.
But…after the ascension of the Son, John met Him in the Spirit in the Revelation of Jesus Christ, a most profound work in our Holy Bible. And now the meeting was quite different, stunning actually. Brother John describes it as this:
Revelation 1:17a When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man…
How different than our modern day Jesus, who for most is a lap dog…a western version of Jesus who is little more than Santa Claus fulfilling our every want. Someone who looks a lot like us who live in the west: nice, affluent, healthy, cordial, and accommodating. This false worship is nothing more than idolatry, the worship of self. The Jesus of Scripture is effaced by this impostor.
The noted theologian John Calvin rightly put it this way in the 1500’s:
“Hence that dread and amazement with which as Scripture uniformly relates holy men were struck and overwhelmed whenever they beheld the presence of God. Men are never duly touched and impressed with a conviction of their insignificance until they have.”
When we misunderstand and negate God’s imminence, we also misunderstand and negate His nearness. And in so doing, we miss them both and misrepresent God to both ourselves and then the world that desperately needs Him.
“Help us, oh God, see You as You really are. We bow our knee to Your majesty and love that flows from Your very heart. It’s the uniform report of Scripture that when men meet You in your transcendence, they all fall on their face.”
