The current divorce and remarriage understanding and practice is a mess by and large in the current day Body of Christ. These short videos and teachings will help you tremendously as it has us here at Walk Worthy!
And it hasn’t been much better since the 2nd century after the early Fathers mistook the Scriptures when they missed the merciful Law provisions for this in both Exodus and Deuteronomy. The early rabbinic writings were also missing, with this further contributing to the problems.
But we modern saints have the whole history and the tools to correctly interpret God’s heart in the manner.
Brother David Instone-Brewer has worked tirelessly to provide the brethren with the basis for a more fuller understanding. May we all imitate our Father and His Son in providing gracious, holy, merciful provision for those effected by the throes of divorce and remarriage.
Here’s brother David’s quick summary:
- The Bible is God’s word to all generations which we have to translate from the language of an ancient civilization.
- Jesus outlawed a Jewish type of divorce called the ‘Any Cause’ divorce.
- Jesus and Paul discouraged all divorce but allowed it for specific grounds.
- Biblical grounds for divorce include adultery, abuse and abandonment.
- Divorce itself is not sinful, but breaking your marriage vows is sinful.
- Only the victim of broken marriage vows may decide to divorce.
- Paul allowed remarriage if someone was divorced against their will.
