“You surely will not die!”
Dear saints,
Many people appeal to social norms to determine if something is good or evil. It’s the logical fallacy that something “normal” and customary is the correct standard.
Religious devotion can be afflicted with the same fallacy. For the serious Christian, the little Christ, that correct standard is holiness…the very thing Jesus would have us perform every moment for His pleasure.
False Logic Format: X is normal behavior. Therefore, X is good or acceptable behavior.
False Secular Example Today: Abortion and being gay is normal behavior. Therefore, abortion and being gay is good and acceptable behavior.
False Religious Example Today: Christian’s sinning is normal behavior, since no one’s perfect (flawless). Therefore, most sin is OK to God.
False Religious Example from the Bible:
Mark 7:5-13 The (false religious leaders like the) Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples (sin and) not walk according to the tradition of the elders (which is normal to us), but eat their bread with impure hands?” And (Jesus) said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE (sinful) PRECEPTS OF MEN.’ Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the (normal sinful) tradition of men.”
He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your (normal sinful) tradition… thus invalidating the word of God by your (normal sinful) tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”
Bible Warnings about this False Logic Premise:
Jude 1:4 For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness (sin) and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ (by saying it’s normal to sin).
True Logic from the Bible:
1 Peter 1:15-16 …but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”
John 5:14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.”
John 8:11b …”Go. From now on sin no more.”
Acts 23:1 Paul, looking intently at the Council, said, “Brethren, I have lived my life with a perfectly good conscience before God up to this day.”
1 Timothy 1:5 But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
Colossians 4:12 Epaphras, who is one of your number, a bondslave of Jesus Christ, sends you his greetings, always laboring earnestly for you in his prayers, that you may stand perfect and fully assured in all the will of God.
Final observation: to walk worthy daily with Christ being perfectly mature is the normal Christian life. Sin is never practiced and is a fluke.
