Our links dealing with this subject follow below after this short introduction.
In these modern days, western teachers in the so-called Christian assemblies often dumb down, keep silent, and/or pollute the clear teachings of the Word in this most vital doctrine: hell and the lake of fire.
Various “tribes” exist that promote these strange and heretical teachings. We have the “just ignore it” tribe: they strongly think the sheep don’t want to hear about this. We have the growing “annihilation” tribe: God will punish for a short spell then just burn them up. We have the tribe of “universalism:” every soul will be saved, so what’s the big deal about hell. Many of these tribes come to their conclusions
Let’s put all this to rest by applying simple biblical interpretation, or hermeneutics. In Daniel 12 and Matthew 25, both Daniel and Jesus use the word “everlasting” and “eternal” in the same verse to apply to both eternal life and eternal damnation. It’s impossible for that word in this context to mean two different things in the same sentence. Let’s take a look.
Daniel 12:2 “Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting (olam) life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting (olam) contempt..”
Matthew 25:45-46 “Then He (Jesus) will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ These (disobedient) will go away into eternal (aionios) punishment, but the righteous (overcomers) into eternal (aionios) life.”
One more thing. Hell, or gehenna, is the place of torment now. At the end of time when Jesus Christ hands over the keys of the kingdom to our Father, then both hell and death will be thrown into the lake of fire along with the devil, the beast, and the false prophet.
Revelation 20:10 And the devil who deceived them (the nations) was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
Revelation 20:14-15 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
Revelation 14:9-12 Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone (in the lake of fire) in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.
“And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”
Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus (as overcomers).
As an aside to further strengthen your apologetic defense, why would God torment the devil and crew day and night forever and ever…and just burn up and annihilate lost humans who end up in there too? Makes absolutely no sense.
